Microlearning is a learning technique in which small units of information are taught over a short period of time. This method makes it easier for the learner to retain information and develop skills by allowing them to learn at a manageable pace.
Microlearning focuses on supplying e-learning solutions across a wide variety of platforms. It yields results because of its interactive and flexible approach, as compared to “macrolearning,” which involves accumulating higher-level knowledge over a longer period of time. This method adapts well to the changing realities of the job market, as e-learning designers can create short courses that respond to current needs, which can then be updated over time by the content owner.
Moreover, learners are able to assess their progress. They can identify which parts of a training are relevant to them and which are not. They can skip the concepts they already know and go directly to the information they need. It’s also possible to incorporate evaluations into each microlearning module, especially on platforms such as Articulate Storyline, which allows for the integration of quizzes with drag-and-drop, true or false, and multiple-choice questions. It is impractical to wait until the very end of a course to assess what you’ve learned. By providing evaluations at the end of each module, the lesson’s aims are reinforced.
Micro-credentials, on the other hand, are a way to integrate microlearning principles into an industry-recognized certificate system. Thus, the learner can enjoy the benefits of microlearning while obtaining credentials. Once the training is complete, learners receive a portable badge that attests to their mastery of a particular competency.
While a micro-credential generally covers more content than an individual microlearning lesson, it can still leverage the benefits of microlearning. Evaluations at the end of short lessons provide indicators of the learner’s mastery of information as they progress through the program. Using approaches offered in microlearning modules, the learner receives more support over a longer process. This method also allows them to accumulate skills and obtain certification much more quickly than would be possible with a traditional college degree or in-person training.
A partnership
Overall, micro-credentials are an excellent way to incorporate microlearning best practices into short, memorable e-learning units. The resulting badge or certificate helps identify job candidates with particular skills, thereby making the hiring process easier. Certificates provide concrete evidence of competency-based learning, which is desirable in today’s job market. LCILX has worked with a variety of organizations to develop both microlearning units and micro-credential certificates, while integrating best practices into cutting-edge programs in industry, government and academia.
